Grand Central Terminal is globally recognized as a center of transportation, civic architecture, and commerce – all at once embodying the historic, economic, cultural, and optimistic spirit of New York City. Opened to the public on February 2, 1913, Grand Central’s rich history is a story of immense wealth and great engineering, but also of survival and rebirth.

This famed landmark welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors daily and serves as host to more than 70 options for shopping and dining. One of Grand Central’s main attractions, the four-faced opal clock in the Main Concourse, is a meeting place for visitors and locals alike. You know you’re a New Yorker when you’ve told a friend to “meet me at the clock”!

Fun Facts
  • Grand Central Terminal is one of the most-visited destinations in New York City for a reason—it’s packed with sights, history, architecture, dining, and shopping all under one magnificent roof.
  • "Meet me at the clock!” Like all those in the terminal, this clock is accurate to within 1 second every 20 billion years, calibrated to the atomic clock in the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, DC. The famed opal glass clock perched atop the Info Booth is valued at $20 million or more.
  • The arches, which feature Guastavino tile, create an acoustical phenomenon. Grab a friend, lean your heads into opposite corners of the gallery, and you’ll hear them clearly from across the room —  even with all Grand Central Terminal’s hustle and bustle.
  • In front of the Grand Central Terminal, the Pershing Square Viaduct is illuminated with color-changing LEDs to recognize major occasions and holidays throughout the year. The lighting serves as a beacon for pedestrians anywhere along 42nd Street.
